You're considering adopting! Congratulations on being part of a positive change! We're so excited for you, and for the rats waiting for their forever homes.
Adopting gives a home to a rat who couldn't stay with their loving owners (or perhaps never had one) and gives them a new chance at a happy life.
We are 100% committed to providing ongoing support to you post adoption, including welcoming back any rat, for any reason, at any time! Our goal is to best match the personalities and circumstances of our adopters with the rats in our care that are seeking their furever homes, so this application is not to apply for a specific rat, but to come and meet all the rats at the rescue and discover who best suits. All rats go through a screening period for health and temperament assessment and recieve any medical care they may need prior to adoption.
Before adopting rats from the rescue, it is important to ask yourself the following questions:
Do I have the time to care for my new rats; including cage cleaning, feeding and generally spending time with them?
Do I have the finances needed to provide appropriate food, bedding, housing and medical expenses (vet care, medication, treatment & surgery) if illness or injury occurs? Do I know some of the approximate costs involved?
Have I identified a local vet that is experienced in and willing to care for rats?
Have I researched, or am I willing to learn about, good rat care including diet, housing and common medical issues? Let us know if you would like us to send you some information to help with your research!
Have I received approval from my landlord or body corporate in regards to having rats in my home, noting that they need to live inside and not in an exposed/outdoor area?
If you answered ‘yes’ to all of the above and would like to come and meet our rats, please fill out the form to apply!
You're welcome to email us directly at email@example.com if you have any questions or would like additional resources.
We hope to see you soon!
The best way to choose your new furry family members is in person! This form does not guarantee the availability or adoption of a specific rat or mouse, but allows you to visit the rescue to choose the individuals that suit you best.
Please put an answer in every field.
We are unable to adopt to people under 18 - you'll need a parent or carer to fill out this form.
It's important that the carer be willing and know how to take care of rats regardless of if the rats will be cared for by someone else, as they'll be registered as the primary carer for us at the rescue. Are you a first time rat owner?
Do you currently own rats? If so, please list their sexes and ages.
Will children be handling the rats? If so, please list their ages.
* Does your household have any smokers, or use other products which may cause respiratory disease in rats?
Smoking includes ALL forms of smoking, such as cigarettes, cigars, any illicit drugs and vaping/e-cigarettes.
If so, is the activity occuring inside, or in shared airspace with the rats, including adjacent rooms?
Products which may cause issues for rats includes incense, aerosol scent or pest control dispensers, scented candles and essential oils, including diffusers.
Were you looking for boys or girls?
We do not adopt out for breeding purposes.
Tell us a little about why you want rats.
* Nutritional Needs
Write a short rundown of rat dietary needs, and some examples of a good diet and appropriate treats
Write a short rundown of rat medical needs, such as the most common illnesses you expect to see, and how much you expect to need to save for vet bills.
Write a short rundown of rat enrichment needs, what is important and how you plan to meet these.
Are you seeking a companion for a rat living alone?
We offer companion fostering for people who intend to stop owning rats but don't want their last rat to live alone.
Feel free to elaborate under 'Other'. If using a pellet or mix not listed, please specify brand.
Please note that while some are great, not all pellet brands are safe for rats, and all supermarket and pet store seed mixes are unsuitable diets.
Do you have permission from your landlord/homeowner to have rats?
Where will your cage/s be kept? For example, the main living area/garage/bedroom.
* Do you currently have a cage?
We can't adopt out until we have a picture of your cage setup.
If you're submitting an application early, when your cage is ready, please email pictures to firstname.lastname@example.org, titled "[Your Name] - Cage Pictures".
Please provide your cage dimensions
* Any additional info?
If there's anything else you want to add or anything that didn't fit in the earlier fields, let us know here.
By submitting this application I acknowledge that I have read and agree to all of the following:
I am adopting the rats above from Rachie’s Ratirement Home, and take full responsibility for their welfare, including medical care if needed. I am over 18. I have discussed the health, temperament and condition of these rats with a volunteer of Rachie’s Ratirement Home and I am happy with all aspects. I am aware that Rachie’s Ratirement Home is happy to take the rats back should any problems arise, including biting with intent to harm, which I understand is not an expected behaviour, and I will contact them if any troubling events or behaviours occur that I need help with.
I agree to maintain the standard of care that I indicated in the adoption application form. In the event that I can or will no longer care for my rats at the agreed standard or adhere to the agreements outlined in this form, I agree to return all rats to Rachie’s Ratirement Home.
I agree to never use these rats for breeding purposes and do everything in my power to prevent pregnancy. The rats will not be used for food. I recognise that these are rescue rats with an unknown genetic and medical history. I understand that like all rats they are susceptible to health problems, especially respiratory illnesses. I agree that Rachie’s Ratirement Home holds no responsibility for the actions of the rats after adoption and that Rachie’s Ratirement Home has done their best to screen rats to prevent adoption of sick or temperamental animals. If for any reason I am unhappy with my experience adopting, I will contact Rachie’s Ratirement Home, who will try to resolve any issues.
For the purposes of all electronic form submission, any document regarding surrender, adoption, boarding, booking or purchases, received at an electronic address will be taken to be signed and authorised by the author.
