Rachie's Ratirement Home recognised in national rescue awards

Last month, Rachie's Ratirement Home was named as a Finalist in the JetPets Companion Animal Rescue Awards under the Outstanding Animal Shelter category.

The Rescue Awards are an Australia-wide initiative which celebrate and acknowledge inspiring examples of individuals and groups dedicated to the rehabilitation and rehoming of companion animals.

Rachie’s Ratirement Home been recognised for its significant contribution to animal welfare by taking in hundreds of rats and mice from all kinds of situations, screening them for health and temperament, and setting up vet care for any injured or sick rodents. Once a rat or mouse is healthy and happy enough to be adopted, the rescue screens applicants to find perfect forever families for these beloved pocket pets.

As the only specialised rat and mouse rescue in Queensland, the rescue prides itself as being a no-kill shelter. Any rat or mouse unsuitable to be rehomed for health or temperament reasons is given a permanent place at the rescue, where they can live out their days in peace under specialised care.

Founded in November 2017 as an altruistic side hobby by current President Rachel Greenfield; it has evolved into a registered not-for-profit incorporated association, run by and for the rodent-owning community.

“We haven’t turned away a domestic rat or mouse in need, which fuels our passion to continue building a strong, sustainable leading welfare resource for our community,” said Rachel Greenfield.

“One of our biggest passions is helping and educating our community, so when we're not actively taking in animals who need rehoming, rehabilitating or finding them their forever families, we love to do educational work.”

In its third year, the Rescue Awards has attracted more than 1,000 entries across 10 categories, including many excellent industry submissions from around the country. The Finalists were determined by a large panel of highly respected judges who have donated their time and expertise to assess the Rescue Awards entries.

The Winner of each category will be revealed at a virtual Rescue Awards Ceremony at 4pm AEDT on 15 October 2020. Please join Rachie's Ratirement Home and all the other finalists in the celebration and watch this special event live via the Rescue Awards Facebook page at @rescueawards.
